Holy Cross Health Center @ Sistrunk
Evaluating the needs of the community is an integral part of the work that the CHWB department does. It is essential to know the history of the communities we are working in, and of the people we are endeavoring to serve. Understanding why health disparities are present in certain communities supports the planning process for affecting change. A case in point, in 1936, a bus accident killed several Black farm laborers and injured many others. The wounded were taken to Memorial Hospital, on the East side of Broward Blvd. In an outrageously cruel action, the hospital refused to admit them because they were Black and left them lying on the grass outside. Two years later, to serve the city's black population, co-founders, Dr. James F. Sistrunk, the first Black physician in Broward County, and Dr. Von Mizell, along with businesswoman, Sylvia Aldridge, who led the fundraising efforts, opened Provident Hospital, a 15-bed facility, in what is now known as the Sistrunk Corridor.
This historic neighborhood and the land the hospital stood on until the 1960s, is in fact the exact location that the Holy Cross Health Center occupies. It is our honor to serve the neighborhood and surrounding community and help to address the social determinants of health and address health equity.
