Dr. Huser is now seeing patients at the Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute

Sara Huser, DO

Fort Lauderdale, Florida (April 21, 2026) – Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, has no cure. For thousands of Americans living with this disease, access to a specialist who understands it deeply and can help navigate its progression makes a tremendous difference in quality of life.

Fortunately, Broward County residents can find this level of specialized care close to home at the Holy Cross Health Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute.

The newest neurologist to join Holy Cross Medical Group, a multi-specialty physician-employed group of more than 180 physicians providing services throughout Broward County, is Sara Huser, DO, who brings fellowship-trained expertise in neuromuscular medicine to the Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute.

“I am drawn to Holy Cross Health’s mission of providing compassionate, patient-centered care and its commitment to serving the community with dignity and respect. At Holy Cross, care is rooted not only in clinical excellence, but also in empathy, service and faith. This aligns deeply with how I practice medicine,” said Dr. Huser. “South Florida is a diverse, growing community with a significant need for specialized neuromuscular care. Holy Cross offers the infrastructure, collaborative environment and mission-driven culture necessary to truly support patients with complex nerve and muscle diseases, making it an ideal fit for both my values and professional goals.”

Dr. Huser specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the nerves and muscles, conditions that are often misunderstood, slow to diagnose, and life-altering for patients and their families. Her areas of focus include ALS, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, muscular dystrophy, neuropathy, myopathy, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, myositis, motor neuron disease and spasticity. She also performs diagnostic procedures including electromyography (EMG), nerve condition studies and skin biopsy and offers Botox injections for neurological conditions including migraine and blepharospasm.

“During the interview process, we were impressed by Dr. Huser’s strong clinical background, thoughtful approach to patient care and clear alignment with our mission,” said Yikcia Merritt, Service Line Director for the Holy Cross Medical Group– Neuroscience. “Four c’s stood out to us: communication, collaboration, compassion and continuity of care. Adding Dr. Huser to the Holy Cross Medical Group allows us to provide more comprehensive, coordinated care to our community.”

Prior to joining Holy Cross, Dr. Huser served as a neurologist and assistant professor at SSM Health Saint Louis University in Missouri, where she was recognized with the Faculty Lecture Teaching Award last year, and as an associate staff neurologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Palm Beach Gardens, where she received the Clinician Excellence Award in 2024. She has contributed to published research on ALS, Guillain-Barre syndrome and multiple sclerosis and has presented at neurology conferences across the United States and internationally. She is board certified in both neurology and neuromuscular medicine.

Dr. Huser earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, New Jersey. While in college, her close friend was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Watching someone she cared deeply about navigate uncertainty, fear and the complexities of a neurological disease had a profound impact on Dr. Huser’s career trajectory. This experience led her to pursue neuromuscular medicine and build long-term relationships with patients to provide them with evidence-based medicine, individualized care tailored to their unique needs, guidance, reassurance, advocacy, knowledge and compassion.

Dr. Huser completed a preliminary internal medicine residency at Jefferson-Abington Health Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania, followed by a neurology residency at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, where she served as chief resident and was named Resident of the Year in 2018. She also fulfilled a neurology fellowship at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Patients can schedule an appointment with Dr. Huser at the Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute, located at 1931 NE 47th Street in Fort Lauderdale, by calling 954-414-9750 or visiting holy-cross.com.
