October 22, 2025
FORT LAUDERDALE (October 23, 2025) – In recognition of philanthropists Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. and the Wanda & Jim Moran Foundation’s $6.5 million gift to Holy Cross Health, the Wanda & Jim Moran, Jr. Emergency Department (ED) was officially named during a celebration held in their honor.
One of the single largest donations in the hospital’s 70-year history, the transformational gift enabled Holy Cross Health to make advancements to the ED and to purchase the Philips Spectral CT 7500. The state-of-the-art CT scanner is now open and available to patients. This generous contribution significantly elevates the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and ability to better serve the community with enhanced emergency care.
“At Holy Cross Health, we believe that generosity is the foundation of transformation. This gift from the Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. Foundation is a powerful investment in the future of emergency care,” said Laura Denoux, Vice President and Chief Development Officer of Holy Cross Health Foundation. “It’s not just about naming a department. It’s about honoring a legacy of compassion and community impact. This gift allows us to expand access, improve outcomes and serve our patients with excellence.”
This CT scanner enables practitioners to provide faster, more accurate assessments and interventions for patients experiencing emergencies such as stroke, acute cardiac and vascular conditions, spinal cord injuries, internal bleeding and complex bone fractures. The machine, which takes only two seconds to scan the chest, abdomen and pelvis, has a large bore and height-adjustable table to provide comfort for patients, while providing high-quality, low dose and low contrast images for physicians to review. The clear, accurate images help practitioners make life-saving decisions faster.
“I see the ripple effect of this gift across departments. It improves collaboration, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and ultimately saving lives,” said Pierre Monice, MBA, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer at Holy Cross Health. “Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr.’s generosity is helping us build a more resilient, responsive healthcare system for our community.”
Doctors, nurses and ED support staff are now better equipped to handle complex cases and deliver emergency care with greater speed, precision, compassion and coordination. In addition to the purchase of the CT scanner, the gift was also used to convert an X-ray room into a dedicated CT room, acquire new medical equipment and support renovations and capital improvements.
“This gift has had an incredible impact on our nursing teams. It has enabled us to enhance training and improve workflows,” said Taren O’Brien, MSN, RN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Holy Cross Health. “The new CT scanner is already making a difference in how quickly we can respond to critical cases. Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr.’s support empowers our nurses to do what they do best, care deeply and act swiftly.”
Combined with previous contributions to Holy Cross, the couple’s support totals $8 million. Their generosity will leave a legacy for generations to come and continues to uplift the entire community.
“This isn’t just a donation, it’s a partnership,” said Mark Caputo, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Holy Cross Health. “Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. understand the urgency and complexity of emergency care. Their investment is helping us innovate, adapt and meet the evolving needs of our patients with confidence.”
