Take action now to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes

High blood pressure, while not a disease in and of itself, may lead to serious heart conditions. High blood pressure is one of the most common causes of sudden heart attack or stroke.

There are a number of steps women can take to help control blood pressure and reduce the risk of premature heart attacks and strokes:

  • Eat a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes daily
  • Quit smoking and avoid tobacco
  • Monitor your blood pressure

If you are experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath, speak to your physician right away. Screenings with your doctor can help you determine if further treatment is necessary. Diagnostic tests may include:

  • Imaging or echocardiogram
  • Stress tests
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Cardiac event monitoring which records your heart’s rhythm
  • Tilt table test

This February, join us in wearing red to raise awareness for heart disease and stroke. Take steps to reduce your risk by eating healthy, exercising and avoiding tobacco. Always check with your doctor if you have any questions about your heart health.
