Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Leadership That Puts Patients First
February 19, 2026
Robert Blake, Manager and Interim Director of Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at Holy Cross Health, draws on his experience as a physical therapist to guide teams that help patients regain strength, mobility, and confidence. This Black History Month, we celebrate how Black leaders like Robert shape healthcare in Broward County, creating environments where patients receive skilled, personalized care at every stage of recovery.
Leadership Grounded in Experience
Robert’s approach to leadership is shaped by his background as a physical therapist, which allows him to understand both the clinical background and professional needs of his team. “As both a physical therapist and a leader, I understand what my team needs to succeed while supporting our organizational goals. Therapists want the freedom to provide high-quality, patient-centered care, along with strong support to navigate challenges. I focus on helping each therapist grow so patients receive care that is consistent, compassionate and thoughtful,” he explains.
Because his leadership is grounded in firsthand clinical experience, Robert focuses on creating an environment where therapists feel supported, prepared and confident in the care they provide. That foundation directly shapes how patients experience rehabilitation at Holy Cross.
The Importance of Emotional Support for Patients
For Robert and his team, effective rehabilitation goes beyond restoring strength or mobility. It also means understanding each patient’s individual experience and goals. “Therapists enter rehabilitation because they love the science and want to help patient live stronger, healthier lives. I encourage my team to lead with empathy, since we never fully know a patient’s story. As we help improve the body, we can also support their confidence, outlook and mental wellbeing,” he says.
