Orthopedic Manual Therapy

Our licensed therapists have specialized training in Orthopedic Manual Therapy, which is a hands-on approach to treating musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunction. Our physical therapists are trained in manual therapy and use specific techniques, such as joint mobilizations, soft tissue techniques and therapeutic exercises for improving mobility and funtion. Joint mobilizations help reduce joint stiffness and pain, increase circulation and restore mobility in joints to improve biomechanical motion. Soft tissue techniques increase circulation and relax muscles so the patint can move through the normal range of motion without restrictions.

Hand Therapy

Hand Therapy is a type of rehabilitation that addresses conditions and injuries of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. It is performed by an occupational or physical therapist who specializes in treating conditions of the upper extremity through advanced study. Our Certified Hand Therapists are occupational or physical therapists with a minimum of five years of clinical experience. Of those five years, four thousand hours or the equivalent of two years full time have to be in direct patient care with hand and upper extremity patients. A Certified Hand Therapist has successfully passed a comprehensive test of advanced skills and theory in upper extremity rehabilitation. In order to maintain the CHT status, a therapist must continue to demonstrate professional development and competency by recertifying every five years.

Our Certified Hand Therapists treat conditions such as:

• Wrist, elbow and shoulder fractures
• Finger fractures
• Upper extremity joint dislocations
• Dupuytren's Contracture after surgery or xiaflex injection
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
• Tendon and nerve injuries
• Arthritis
• Tennis elbow and other types of tendinosis
• Frozen shoulder
• Rotator cuff injuries

Comprehensive Lymphedema Management Program

Our lymphedema management program is offered through Outpatient Rehabilitation at the main Holy Cross Hospital campus in Fort Lauderdale. Lymphedema is an abnormal buildup of fluid in the tissues and can result from post surgical interventions, chronic venous insufficiency, as a sequela of disease or trauma, parasite infections and reactions to certain treatments. The effects of lymphedema may include any of the following: loss of functional mobility, increased risk of infection and loss of tissue function. The lymphedema program is designed to provide patients with comprehensive treatment including manual lymph drainage, skin evaluation, exercise, bandaging techniques and garment wear to control swelling. Our expert staff is dedicated to providing patients with the knowledge of how to manage chronic lymphedema over time, helping then to remain active in their daily lives. A typical treatment consists of daily sessions for two weeks. Family participation is highly encouraged.

Ask your physician for a prescription so you can enroll in our lymphedema program. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 954-492-5738.

Balance and Vestibular Program

Balance is vital to normal every day life activities such as getting out of a chair and walking, bending over to put on your shoes, washing your hair, driving a car or going grocery shopping. Just about everything you do in your daily life, whether for work or leisure, requires balance control - most of the time you don't have to think about it. When balance problems develop, however, they can cause profound disruptions in your daily life. In addition to increased risk for falls, balance disorders can shorten your attention span, disrupt normal sleep patterns and cause excessive fatigue. People with balance and dizziness problems can have difficulty with even the simplest tasks. The good news is there are medical professionals who are specially trained in the evaluation and treatment of balance and vestibular disorders. These professionals can implement effective treatment plans for individuals who experience balance problems or dizziness.

At Holy Cross Hospital, a licensed therapist performs a thorough evaluation which may include postural, balance, movement and strength assessment. After obtaining the results, the therapist will develop an individualized treatment plan that includes specific head, body and eye exercises to be performed both in the therapy setting and at home. With time and consistent practice, coordination of signals from the eyes, proprioception and vestibular system can improve your balance and decrease your risk for falls.

Ask yourself the following questions:

• Do I feel unsteady?
• Do I feel as if the room is "spinning" around me?
• Do I feel as if I'm moving when I know I'm standing still?
• Do I lose my balance and fall?
• Do I feel as if I'm falling?
• Do I feel as if I might faint? (Sometimes people call
  this "lightheaded")
• Does my vision become blurred?
• Do I ever feel disoriented? (Lose my sense of time, place,
  identity)

If your answer to any of the above questions is "yes," you shoudl discuss these symptoms with your physician soon so you might prevent an unnecessary fall. Once you have obtained a prescription from your physician, please contact us for an appointment to be evaluated by a therapist: 954-492-5738.
