HolyCrossRoads Health Management Program
Holy Cross Hospital has received a grant of $30,000 from Health Foundation of South Florida to expand the HolyCrossRoads Health Management Program during 2011.
Holy Cross Hospital will use the grant to enrich the physical, mental, emotional and overall well-being of its 2,887 employees. A major component of the program is to make the work environment more supportive of positive behaviors such as healthy eating, being physically active, maintaining healthy body mass index (BMI), managing stress and quitting tobacco.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. 30% of adults in Florida are overweight and 25.1% are obese. Studies indicate that obesity is a major risk factor for developing diabetes and hypertension and that proper nutrition and fitness can significantly reduce the risk.
“Employees in health care should set the example for the community by caring for their own body and spirit. As we expand our wellness program, Holy Cross strives to become a leading employer in our community by providing worksite wellness. Implementing a policy, creating a culture of caring and encouragement and providing opportunities and incentives to become healthier, supports our mission of serving the health care needs of our community,” states Luisa Gutman, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Holy Cross Hospital.
