Judith Chiles, Herbert and Phyllis Kaplan receive honor
Among 791 volunteers who collectively gave 130,000 hours of service to Holy Cross Hospital in 2011, three were honored as the hospital's 2011-2012 Volunteers of the Year: Judith Chiles, who has served 3,900 hours since 2006; Herbert Kaplan, who has given 7,934 hours since 1992; and, who has volunteered 1,051 hours since 2009.
"It is a great pleasure to recognize the dedication and devotion of these three individuals by honoring them as the Holy Cross 2011-2012 Volunteers of the Year," said Holy Cross Hospital President and CEO Patrick A. Taylor, M.D. "We appreciate all of our volunteers and the time they dedicate to the mission of Holy Cross, serving patients and assisting our Associates."
Volunteers of the Year are chosen from volunteer-of-the-month honorees, who are nominated by their peers or associates for consistent achievement over a sustained period of time, a specific outstanding contribution, prudent use of human and financial resources, dedication and innovation or excellence in guest relations.
Chiles, a resident of Ft. Lauderdale was named Volunteer of the Month in March 2010 and again in February 2012. She has served in several hospital departments, including the Auxiliary office, public relations, and the Heart Healthy Café, where she greets customers with a smile and cheerfully helps staff. She also volunteers for the hospital's Dinner with the Doctor weekly lecture series, coordinating logistics for the event, which attracts almost 100 people each week.
"Judi is known throughout the hospital for her excellent customer service skills and upbeat, positive attitude," Dr. Taylor said. "She represents the epitome of excellence in volunteering."
Herbert Kaplan and his wife Phyllis, residents of Plantation, were named as Volunteers of the Month in May 2011.
Herbert volunteers in the hospital's outpatient surgery area, where he assists staff with patients and their families before and after surgery. Herbert also has served at the hospital's patient information desk.
"Herb brings his experience in marketing and sales to his volunteer work, where his personality and dedication have made him very popular with our Associates," Dr. Taylor said.
Phyllis assists the nurses in the hospital's intensive care units and helps guide and direct families who are waiting for their loved ones in surgery. She also helps the surgical information volunteer when needed.
"Phyllis has such a kind and compassionate personality that has endeared her to both Associates and her fellow volunteers," Dr. Taylor said. "Due to her many years serving as a corporate secretary and treasurer, she is able to bring experience and wisdom to volunteering, where she often jumps right in when she identifies a need."
The Volunteers of the Year are recognized annually during a Volunteer Appreciation and Service Awards Luncheon. More than 300 guests attended this year's luncheon, which was themed “Especially for You.”
