FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 13, 2014) – Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale is a designated Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Shared Care site, part of a network that works closely with centers around the country to care for patients with heart pump implants as they travel or relocate from the site where the surgeries were performed.
In recent years, technology has progressed to the point where previously end-stage heart failure patients can receive mechanical implants that circulate blood throughout the body and then go home after the device has been implanted.  According to the National Institutes of Health, those with LVADs can fly and use all other forms of transportation and, consequently, have the option to travel or move after having surgery.

“Today, thousands of patients around the world receive LVADs each year, and people living with advanced heart failure have the potential to live longer and with better quality,” said Joshua Larned, M.D., FACC, a cardiologist who specializes in advanced heart failure / transplant cardiology at Holy Cross Hospital.  “From maintenance to trouble-shooting to having systems in place that support LVAD patients, LVAD shared sites can offer patients peace of mind as they return to their communities or venture away from their implanting centers.”
