FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - High school students from Zion Lutheran in Deerfield Beach  and Cardinal Gibbons, St. Thomas Aquinas and Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale recently participated in the Nursing Consortium of South Florida's annual Day in the Life of a Nurse program, hosted by Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale for the 11th consecutive year.

The full-day program was conducted for students to learn about nursing careers by touring key hospital departments and participating in various activities, including a skills lab where students interacted with a simulated patient and learned about infection control, CPR, care of newborns, surgical protocols and wound care, among other nursing skills.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the United States is projected to experience a shortage of nurses through 2030 due to factors such as the healthcare needs of a large, aging baby boomer population, nurses retiring from the field, the increasing number of health problems being treated due to technological advances, and an increased emphasis on preventive care.

"Young adults are predicted to find strong career opportunities in this field," said Holy Cross Hospital Clinical Nurse Specialist Lorraine Fueyo, MSN, RN, CNS, CNS-BC. "There is a critical need for new nurses, and career days such as Day in the Life are an opportune time to introduce students to the possibilities that nursing has to offer," Fueyo added.

Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S. Department of Labor.
