Medical Practice Adds Neurosurgeon, Endocrinologist, Internist, Rheumatologist, and Orthopedic Surgeon

Holy Cross Hospital President and CEO Patrick A. Taylor, M.D. announced that Drs. Carlos Casas, Sylvia Diaz, David Dunhill, Aviva Hopkins, and Frank McCormick have joined the Holy Cross Medical Group, a multi-specialty physician employed group of more than150 physicians providing services throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties.

"These five individuals are among the top practicing physicians in their respective medical fields, and we're honored to welcome them to the Holy Cross Medical Group," Taylor said. "Their expertise in neurosurgery, endocrinology, internal medicine, rheumatology and orthopedic surgery complement the wide range of comprehensive care and services offered by the Medical Group."

Carlos E. Casas, M.D.
Dr. Carlos E. Casas joined the Holy Cross Medical Group from Stanford University Medical Center where he served as a neurosurgery clinical instructor. Dr. Casas' sub-specialized training includes stereotactic radiosurgery and complex and minimally invasive spine surgery. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society and the Florida Medical Association. Dr. Casas completed a neurosurgery spine and CyberKnife fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine, a neurosurgery residency at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, a general surgery internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a post-doctoral research fellowship in spinal cord injury and regeneration at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Fluent in Spanish and English, he received his medical degree from the Universidad de la Sabana School of Medicine in Chia, Colombia.

Sylvia Diaz, M.D.
Dr. Sylvia Diaz previously served as an endocrinology fellow at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami School of Medicine, prior to joining the Holy Cross Medical Group. Certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, Dr. Diaz is a member of the American Heart Association, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the Endocrine Society. She has served as an attending physician in Costa Rica at Santiago Crespo Home Retirement and at the Marcial Rodriguez Clinic, and as a research lab assistant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Diaz completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine, and received her medical doctorate, medical license and bachelor's degree in Costa Rica from the Escuela Autonoma de Ciencias Medicas de Centro America.

David Dunhill, M.D.
Prior to joining the Holy Cross Medical Group, Dr. David Dunhill served as an internal medicine resident at Emory University in the primary care track. While at Emory, he was involved in many educational activities with students and residents including serving as a simulation lab instructor and leading several workshops on interview skills. While at Emory, he received the Ambulatory Resident of the Year Award in 2012 and also graduated with Distinctions in Teaching. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and his bachelor's degree in microbiology and cell science from the University of Florida.

Aviva Hopkins, M.D.
Board-certified in internal medicine, Dr. Aviva Hopkins recently completed the American Board of Internal Medicine Research Pathway program in rheumatology at Jackson Memorial Hospital / University of Miami, which combined research with training in clinical rheumatology. A member of the American College of Rheumatology and the Florida Medical Association, Dr. Hopkins has several years of teaching and research experience, and has been published in several medical journals. She completed a fellowship in clinical rheumatology and her residency in internal medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital / University of Miami. Dr. Hopkins received her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and her bachelor's degree from the Barnard College of Columbia University in New York.

Frank McCormick, M.D.
Prior to joining the Holy Cross Medical Group, Dr. Frank McCormick served as an assistant team physician for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Steel, and DePaul University. Dr. McCormick also served in the United States Navy from 2000 to 2012. He is a member of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopedic Sports Medicine Society, International Cartilage Research Society, the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons, and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. The recipient of numerous academic awards, military honors and research grants, and widely published in medical journals, Dr. McCormick has served as an instructor for several arthroscopic and surgical training courses. He completed a fellowship in shoulder, knee, hip and sports medicine at the Rush University Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Chicago, and recently completed an International Cartilage Repair Society European Traveling Fellowship. Dr. McCormick served as chief resident of the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and completed a basic surgery internship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and his bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan. Dr. McCormick specializes in sports medicine, orthopedic biologics, cartilage/meniscal transplantation, and arthroscopic treatment of the hip, shoulder, and knee.
