Karan Munuswamy

Dr. Karan Munuswamy is a clinical hypertension specialist at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As he explains, hypertension is a major concern in the U.S., where one of every three adults in this country (80 million in total) is thought to have hypertension issues. Hypertension can lead to heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney failure. You can avoid hypertension through lifestyle choices: maintain a healthy weight, eat right – including moderate salt and alcohol consumption – and exercise regularly.

Hello! I’m Andi Tillis and this is Ask the Doc with Holy Cross Hospital. Joining me is Dr. Claudio Smuclovisky, director of the South Florida Medical Imaging and Cardiovascular Institute at Holy Cross Hospital. Hello, Dr. Smuclovisky! How are you?

Great, Andi. Thank you.

You’re welcome. Tell me about your specialty.

I’m a cardiovascular imaging specialist where we use various imaging technologies to detect and treat heart disease.

Tell me about the test you use and are they able to help you prevent heart disease?

The latest breakthrough technology we’re using is computer tomography. That is an X-ray machine that’s highly specialized and does 3D imaging of the heart that allows us to see heart disease even decades before a patient has symptoms.

And what is the risk of heart disease when it goes untreated?

The risk is extremely high where a person essentially becomes a walking time bomb.

And heart disease and cancer are both very serious diseases. Which one is actually more common?

Without question, cardiovascular diseases and it’s the number one cause of death worldwide and the incidence of 50 percent of all males will develop a heart attack and one third, that is 33 percent of all females as opposed to cancer where the lifetime risk of all cancers is around 22 percent.

That’s fascinating. What words of advice would you have for someone who has a history of heart disease in their family?

If the person is currently not under treatment, they should definitely go to their doctor and assess the risk and see if they qualify for this type of test.
