Hello! I’m Andi Tillis and this is Ask the Doc with Holy Cross Hospital. Joining me is Dr. Michael Rush, an interventional radiologist and chief of the department of radiology at Holy Cross Hospital. Hello, Dr. Rush! Welcome.

Hi, Andi. Thank you.

What is an interventional radiologist?

An interventional radiologist is a physician who works in the surgical subspecialty of radiology. We use medical imaging to guide the placement of catheters, needles, and other devices deep into the body.

And which areas of the body does an interventional radiologist focus on?

We pretty much work everywhere in the body whereas a cardiologist may tend to limit their practice to the heart, we work in the arteries that go to the brain, in the legs, liver, intestine.

And how is Holy Cross a leader in interventional radiology?

Well, Holy Cross has been a leader in interventional radiology for a number of years. The Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Institute has been extremely supportive of our FDA protocol research. Currently, we’re doing work in benign prosthetic hypertrophy. We’re doing work in stent graft placement. We treat aneurysm, we treat vascular insufficiencies to the lower extremities. We’ve been blessed with a large and varied practice. Our practice also includes doing things like treating for vertebral fractures so wen grandmother falls down and breaks her back, we have a mechanism to put a needle through the back, into the vertebral body, and augment that vertebral body with glue and that bone cement basically keeps the fracture from continuing.

Wonderful. Thank you so much, doctor. To learn more about this Ask the Doc segment, visit AskTheHolyDoc.com. Remember to join me next week for another Ask the Doc segment.
