Hello! I’m Andi Tillis and this is Ask the Doc with Holy Cross Hospital. Joining me is Dr. Carolina Valdes, a neurologist at Holy Cross Hospital. Hello, Dr. Valdes!

Hi, thank you for having me.

It’s a pleasure. So you’re a neurologist who specializes in epilepsy. What are the latest breakthroughs in the treatment of epilepsy?

This is a very exciting time in epilepsy. We have new antiepileptic medications. We have new surgical approaches as well as we have new devices. For example, we have the NeuroPace, the RNS which is basically a device for medically refractory patients that have a focal epilepsy syndrome that are not surgical candidates.

And what advice could you give someone newly diagnosed with epilepsy?

You know, the best advice that I could give is just to be proactive about your condition, to stay current, and to write things down. A lot of times, you go to the neurologist and you’ve forgotten every question that you’ve wanted to ask so whenever you think of something that you’d like to talk to your neurologist about, just write it down.

What sets you and the Holy Cross team apart from other hospitals in neurology treatment?

So the Neuroscience Institute is actually a multidisciplinary team and we’re dedicated to provide patient care to neurology, epilepsy, sleep, comprehensive stroke, neurospine, so just a wide variety of conditions. In addition, we have state of the art technology such as a 3-tesla MRI machine and within my own specialty, the epilepsy department, we have the epilepsy monitoring unit which is a level three epilepsy center.
