Hello! I’m Andi Tillis and this is Ask the Doc with Holy Cross Hospital. Joining me is Dr. Katie Heim, a specialist in orthopedic surgery at Holy Cross Hospital. Hello, Dr. Heim! Welcome.

Hi, Andi. Thanks for having me.

It’s a pleasure. Please tell me about your specialty.

So I trained in orthopedic surgery which is the treatment of conditions affecting the bones and joints in the body, and then I did additionally training in hand and upper extremity surgery focusing in a little bit more on conditions that effect the hands, the wrists, and the elbows.

What are the most common conditions you see?

The most common conditions I treat are carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger fingers, and then various broken bones in the hands and wrists.

And when is an injury serious enough to see a specialist?

Any time someone’s worried that something might be infected, if it becomes red or swollen or if they get a fever, that’s time that they’re gonna wanna see a specialist. Also if you have an injury and you become completely unable to use something like you can’t bend one of your fingers at all, you definitely wanna see a specialist at that time too.

And doctor, you’ve come all the way from Pennsylvania to take a position at Holy Cross Hospital. What made you choose Holy Cross?

I was very impressed with the multispecialty setup at Holy Cross. It’s convenient for the patients and it’s also nice for the physicians to have a variety of primary care doctors as well as specialists all within then same network. It helps us coordinate our plans of care for our patients and it’s beneficial for the patients as well.

And what sets you and Holy Cross apart in orthopedics?

Some of our orthopedic locations have therapists right on site in the same building as the surgeons and that’s nice for the patients and the doctors as well so that they can coordinate what the plans are gonna be for those patients.

That’s wonderful. Thank you so much, doctor.

Thank you.
