Foot and Ankle

Ankles and feet are integral to accomplishing our normal daily activities. Ankles support a force about five times a person's body weight when they walk. When ankle cartilage is destroyed or seriously damaged due to a fracture or arthritis, the pain can be debilitating.

Specialized bones, joints and muscles in the bones and feet work together to achieve a unique combination of stability and flexibility. The approach by the Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute is to view problems in the larger context of the entire foot and ankle. A disorder in one part of the foot affects the others, so no foot problem can be viewed in isolation. Early intervention may be the difference between a full recovery and a lifetime of chronic foot or ankle pain.

Our physicians have extensive experience with the full spectrum of ankle and foot disorders, including those affecting professional and recreational dancers; pro-athletes and weekend warriors; and those disorders that occur due to stress inflicted on these important joints through a person's normal daily routine.

Particular areas of interest include:

  • Ankle arthritis

  • Painful bunions

  • Failed surgical procedures of foot/ankle

  • Deformities due to rheumatoid arthritis

  • Runners injuries/orthotics

  • Diabetic foot care

When pain can no longer be managed with conservative measures, such as medications, braces or orthotics, your doctor may recommend other alternatives, including surgery. Careful evaluation of a patient's particular problem, lifestyle and expectations will help determine which type of surgery would best meet the patient's needs.
