More than 4 million people in the United States are currently infected with chronic Hepatitis C and, of that number, three out of four are undiagnosed. The new Hepatitis test is being introduced in just 12 cities across the country and will present participants with their results in 20 minutes or less and has a 98 percent accuracy rate. One of only four agencies trained by OraSure to lead this effort in the State of Florida, Broward House has been selected as the lead agency in Broward County.
Chronic Hepatitis C can result in long-term health problems including liver damage, liver failure, liver cancer or even death and is the most common reason for liver transplantation in the United States. Approximately 8,000 - 10,000 people die each year from Hepatitis C related liver disease. There is no vaccine for the virus and approximately 75 – 85 percent of people who are infected with the virus will develop chronic infection.
