Holy Cross Hospital Dedicates a Jewish Family Room
Hospital continues mission to serve all faiths and cultures with Christ-like compassion
Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale recently dedicated a Jewish Family Room in order to ensure sensitivity to specific religious requirements of the families of Jewish patients.
The room was made possible through the efforts of Holy Cross Hospital Administration, Jon Kotler, MD, and Gesher Tzedaka (Bridge of Charity), a social service organization that provides assistance to families of patients in South Florida hospitals. Gesher's primary purpose is to provide Jewish hospitality suites where families can find solace.
"At Holy Cross Hospital, we have such a diverse team working to meet the physical and spiritual needs of a diverse population," said Sister Rita Levasseur, Vice President of Mission and Sponsorship. "Making a Jewish Family Room available to the families of patients is one way we can continue to fulfill our Mission to serve the healthcare needs of persons of all faiths and cultures with Christ-like compassion."
The Jewish Family Room at Holy Cross Hospital provides a Kosher kitchen area, a fully stocked refrigerator, comfortable seating, reading materials and telephone/computer services.
Gesher Tzedaka's Efi Fixler, a local businessman formerly from New York, was accustomed to the concept of community organizations that provide a place of respite for the families of loved ones undergoing medical treatment. Fixler has headed up efforts to create Jewish hospitality suites in Miami-Dade County. Holy Cross is the first Broward County hospital to offer such a suite.
"It's very important that when a person comes to the hospital who does not speak the language someone will attend to them," said Fixler. The Jewish Family Room will be identified in Hebrew.
"If people have to choose between hospitals, if they know there is a hospital that welcomes the Jewish community, they will choose this one," Fixler added.
