Catholic Health East

Holy Cross Hospital is a member of a larger family known as Catholic Health East.

Catholic Health East is a multi-institutional Catholic health system, which is co-sponsored by 13 religious congregations, and Hope Ministries, a Public Juridic Person within Catholic Health East. Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, the System provides the means to ensure the continuation of the Catholic identity and operational strength of the sponsors' health ministries, which are located within 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida.

The System includes 31 acute care facilities, 42 free-standing and hospital-based skilled nursing facilities, 21 residential facilities, three free-standing behavioral health facilities, 29 home health agencies, a managed care plan and numerous ambulatory and community based health services with more than 14,000 beds. Catholic Health East facilities employ 43,000 full time employees as partners in ministry.

Catholic Health East has four divisions, the Southeast Division in Tampa, Florida; the Northeast Division in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Mid-Atlantic and Continuing Care Divisions in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. With combined total revenues of $4.3 billion and $5.2 billion in total assets, Catholic Health East is one of the nation's largest Catholic health care systems.

Our Values
As a faith-based healthcare ministry, it is vitally important that we meet both our challenges and opportunities in the context of -- and in accordance with -- our Core Values:

  • Reverence for each person
We believe that each person is a manifestation of the sacredness of human life.
  • Community
We demonstrate our connectedness to each other through inclusive and compassionate relationships.
  • Justice
We advocate for a society in which all can realize their full potential and achieve the common good.
  • Commitment to those who are poor
We give priority to those whom society ignores.
  • Stewardship
We care for and strengthen the ministry and all resources entrusted to us.
  • Courage
We dare to take the risks our faith demands of us.
  • Integrity
We keep our word and are faithful to who we say we are.
The History of Catholic Health East
Catholic Health East was formed through the coming together of twelve religious sponsors and their three health systems to create a new co-sponsored health system. In May 1997, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, nine regional communities of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, and the Sisters of Providence announced their intent to form a new co-sponsored system, to be called Catholic Health East. In the fall of 1997, Allegany Health System, Eastern Mercy Health System, and Sisters of Providence Health System combined legally and operationally to create Catholic Health East.

Catholic Health East is rooted in the liberating love of God. We believe in the sacredness of human life, in the innate dignity of each human person, and that is in relationship with one another that all persons realize their fullest human potential.
